Now Accepting Nominations for the 6th Annual Sam Provence Award

Nominations for Helping Restore Ability’s sixth annual Sam Provence Award are now being accepted. The Sam Provence Award is bestowed annually to an individual who advocates for the rights of the disabled population and works diligently on their behalf, as did HRA’s founder, Sam Provence. Nominations are due no later than Friday, April 14. The 2017 Sam Provence Award honoree will be announced at the HuRrAh! Fashion and Food Benefit on Saturday, May 20.

Sam Provence was the last diagnosed victim of polio in Tarrant County. He believed that people with a disabling condition could lead independent lives with some assistance.  Sam helped pave the way for wheelchair access while attending the University of Texas at Arlington and helped initiate Arlington’s Handitran ride share program, providing door-to-door transportation services for the elderly and people with disabilities.

Previous Sam Provence Award winners include Doug Garner, head coach of the UTA Movin’ Mavs and most recently, Cathy Whittington, who created communication and training videos for first responders and community representatives to improve understanding, interaction and communication with the disabled population.

Please fill out a nomination form and turn it in via e-mail to or in person at our office, 4300 Beltway Place, suite 130, Arlington, TX 76018. If you have any questions regarding the award or nominations please call us at 817-469-1977.
