Learn more about our history, the extensive services we offer, and why choosing us is a valuable decision for those in need of assistance.
The History of Helping Restore Ability
Founded in 1977 as the Arlington Handicapped Association by Sam Provence and his friends, Helping Restore Ability has a deep-rooted commitment to improving the lives of individuals with disabilities. Sam, believed to be the last person diagnosed with polio in Tarrant County, and his dedicated team had a vision: to ensure that physical disabilities would not limit a person’s ability to live independently and fully participate in society.
In 1988, we evolved beyond Arlington and were renamed the Handicapped Resource Association. Recognizing the need for a name that reflected our broader mission, we began operating as Helping Restore Ability in 1999 and officially changed our legal name in 2011. Today, we are known for our unwavering dedication to supporting Texans with disabilities, striving to ensure that no one lacks the resources needed for an independent life.
Comprehensive Services Offered by Helping Restore Ability
Consumer Directed Services (CDS)
We offer Consumer Directed Services (CDS) across Texas. This program allows individuals to hire and train their own caregivers while we handle the administrative tasks such as payroll. CDS empowers clients to make decisions about their care, offering greater flexibility and control over how and when services are provided. Key benefits include:
- Choosing and hiring personal attendants
- Setting working schedules and responsibilities
- Training attendants and deciding on their pay
- Approving time and managing budgets
Agency Directed Services
In North Texas, we provide Agency Directed Services, which include several types of care plans:
- Community Attendant Services: In-home attendants for adults needing medical assistance.
- Primary Home Care: Home care services prescribed by a physician.
- Family Care: Support for adults with functional limitations in daily activities.
- Star Plus/Star Kids: Long-term disability services with support tailored to individual needs.
We manage human resources activities, including recruitment, background checks, training, and payroll, ensuring quality care and compliance with state programs.
Veterans Assistance: VetAssist Program
The VetAssist Program helps wartime veterans and their surviving spouses obtain in-home care at no out-of-pocket cost through a lesser-known VA pension. This program includes:
- Expert assistance with VA applications and military records
- An interest-free loan for immediate home care
- High-quality care from contracted providers
- Continuing client services and monitoring
Veterans and their families benefit from the VetAssist Companion, a voice-activated, video-calling system integrated with medical alert features for enhanced security and communication.
